Dietician
A dietician applies the scientific principles of nutrition to the preparation of different kinds of food for people enjoying good health and for those suffering from disease. The role of dietitian is very important for physical health of person as well as in the treatment of the patient. Today people are more conscious and seek advice of professional to keep fit and fine. Dieticians guide the clueless on healthy eating habits and draw up a personalised food plan that meets the patient’s dietary restrictions, occupational constraints, fitness and stress levels, etc. Other than planning meals, dieticians also look into the day-to-day functioning of the organization. Dieticians find jobs in hotels, hospitals, in the processed food industry, and in teaching. Eligibility: To option as a career of dietitian, student is required to complete at least a bachelor's degree in dietetics, foods and nutrition, food service systems management, or a related area. Students can take course of business, mathematics, statistics, computer science, psychology, sociology, and economics and then they can do diploma in foods and nutrition from reputed institutes. Course: Dietetics is studied only after a bachelor's degree in any one of the following disciplines: home science, medicine, science (with chemistry, microbiology), hotel management and catering. Some universities offer postgraduate diploma courses in dietetics. Subjects taught in dietetics include chemistry, physics, nutrition and physiology. Dietetics may be taken up as a specialization in home science at the Master's degree level in many universities in the country. Institutions: A number of universities offer a 3-yr BSc/BA in Nutrition/Dietetics. These subjects are also offered as a post-graduate specialisation both at the degree (Masters in Home Sc/Applied Nutrition) as well as post-graduate diploma level.
